Federico Rui Arte Contemporanea presents the solo exhibition “The Seven Oceans” by Christian Balzano, curated by Alessandro Romanini.
The artist reflects on the superstructures constructed by humankind, which create cultural barriers and political borders in an attempt to dominate nature. Canvases covered in gold leaf—symbolizing a society that considers wealth its primary resource—are oxidized and treated with acid, then immersed in the sea for seven days to evoke the time migrant populations need to cross what separates them from a new world and new hopes. During this time, weathering agents mark the surface like an indelible scar of the past.
They are maps of new territories, engraved with blood-red lines—like wounds—where humanity attempts to impose artificial divisions.
